Steel makers Tata Steel in Europe and POSCO from South Korea will collaborate to develop and test cutting-edge steels and tube designs. The innovative steel concepts will be used to create a hyperloop – a tube big enough to carry a passenger or freight pod able to travel at more than 1,000kmh while using very little energy.

Steel is an essential material in building the infrastructure needed for the hyperloop, including the tubes through which it would travel. The giant steel tubes required for the hyperloop have numerous unique features compared with normal tubes. For instance, they need to allow the passenger or freight vehicle inside to travel in a low-pressure environment – where air is removed to reduce resistance and minimise energy usage – as well as retaining straightness over long distances.

Combining technical expertise

Tata Steel and POSCO will develop high quality steel grades which are tailored for use in these large diameter tubes – up to 3.5m. Additionally, the companies will join their efforts in research on innovative tube concepts and designs.

Speaking after the collaboration documents were signed in a virtual ceremony, Ernst Hoogenes, Chief Technical Officer at Tata Steel, said: “Globally, hyperloops hold a lot of potential for the future of high-speed sustainable transport, and these are very exciting projects. This is an important part of our ambitions towards decarbonisation.

“We are delighted to join forces with POSCO. Pooling our joint technical expertise will enable us to scale up our innovation efforts and give our customers the cutting-edge products they need to be successful.”

Dr Duk-Lak Lee, Head of Technical Research Laboratories at POSCO, said: “POSCO has been conducting hyperloop-related research such as feasibility, design and structural optimisation of various types of steel tubes for more than 10 years, and has developed optimal steel materials and design solutions in terms of structural stability and economic efficiency. This will contribute to realising hyperloop as the future eco-friendly transportation method.”

Working towards the future of mobility

As society opts for low-carbon cars and contemplates mass transport options such as the radical hyperloop, steel will continue to play a major part in ensuring the mobility choices of the future are safe, affordable and sustainable.

Robert Lickley Refractories Ltd are pleased to announce that in 2020 we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary, after having first started life as Robert Lickley Ltd in July 1970.

The Company was founded by Mr Robert Lickley, who had previously been Sales Director of Gibbons Refractories based in Dudley in the West Midlands. He decided to branch out with his own business, initially producing a small range of castable and precast products under the ARELCRETE brand name, with the emphasis being on producing high quality products and excellent customer service.

Unfortunately, Mr Lickley is no longer with us, but his spirit and legacy lives on and we are sure that he would have been so proud of the Company and its employees’ in achieving this landmark anniversary.

It goes without saying that he would wish us to express how sincerely grateful we are to all our customers, suppliers and other stakeholders, many of whom have been with us through good times and bad over the last 50 years. We would like to thank them for their support and contribution throughout this period, helping us to achieve this historic milestone in the Company’s history.

Over the last 5 decades, the Company has faced many challenging and difficult times, but always had the strength, determination and resilience to overcome them. Now in 2020, with the challenges presented by Covid 19 and Brexit, we will continue to adapt and move forward.

The original principles of Quality and Service on which the Company was founded are every bit as relevant today as they were 50 years ago. We remain as optimistic as ever that things will improve over the coming weeks and months ahead and
look forward to many more years of co-operation and partnership with everyone associated with Robert Lickley Refractories Ltd.

IMS (Insulation Machining Services, a division of SIG Performance Technology Group) announce the opening of a new ‘Super Site’, located in the heart of Leeds, to open in December 2020.

As one of the world’s leading experts in high temperature insulation products and associated services, with multiple locations across the UK and various international outlets, IMS work in conjunction with many of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of insulation products to provide a product portfolio of unsurpassed quality, alongside an expert support service.

The new 20,000 sq ft building will be located adjacent to the M621, with excellent links to the UK’s road networks. The facility is being designed and constructed with the customer at its core due to the efficiencies it will soon provide.

IMS Leeds offers customers access to the full depth of the IMS product portfolio consolidated under one roof.

The centralisation of stock into Leeds will ultimately provide convenience for the customer; improving service, reducing the need to consolidate shipments across multiple sites and improving internal processes and control measures to ensure optimal performance.

Haylee Rees, IMS Sales Director, comments, “The IMS Leeds location sits right at centre of the key markets we serve. We are delighted with the location and new strategic offering the new facility provides. Our service is now best-in-class due to the vast range of high-quality refractory materials now available from our Leeds location.”

The existing satellite IMS site in Dudley will be closed to make way for the added efficiencies of the new Leeds centre.

Further plans to include additional services from within the facility will be announced shortly.

IMS Leeds opens December 2020.

Ceramitec 2021 is postponed to June 21–24, 2022. The postponement was decided at the proposal of the Exhibitors’ Advisory Board of Ceramitec and is due to trade fair policy reasons.

“From today’s perspective, Ceramitec could take place thanks to Messe München’s sophisticated protection and hygiene concept. However, due to trade fair policy reasons, the Exhibitors’ Advisory Board has asked for a postponement to the year 2022. We comply with this proposal,” says Gerhard Gerritzen, Member of Messe München’s Management Board and responsible for Ceramitec. “We are all convinced that postponing the event by one year with the opportunity to have Ceramitec running in parallel to Analytica and Automatica is the right way to then realize a successful fair on site with the usual high share of international participants.”

The decision to postpone the event was taken by Messe München in close cooperation with the Exhibitors’ Advisory Board of Ceramitec, which includes many companies and associations of the ceramics industry. The Chairman of the Exhibitors’ Advisory Board, Dr. Jürgen Blumm, Managing Director of Netzsch Gerätebau GmbH, explains: “The majority of partners and exhibitors would like to see Ceramitec 2021 postponed, as they see the success of their trade fair participation endangered. At the same time, Ceramitec’s international importance for the entire industry is so great that we do not want to take this risk.”

Even at this turbulent time, Messe München and the Ceramitec team see themselves as partners of the industry: “We will continue to develop and digitally complement our platform to add fresh momentum to the ceramics industry — both at our home base in Munich and worldwide,” explains Gerhard Gerritzen. “We look forward to making Ceramitec 2022 a complete success together with our partners and customers.”

Information is available at www.ceramitec.com.
