The route to net zero and the collective desire to meet the target date of 2050 is focussing the minds of those in our sector, our customer’s sectors and the supporting industries in the supply chain. In this issue we focus on decarbonisation and some of the initiatives to aid manufacturing in achieving the ambitious targets. Energy storage is a particularly important aspect of the quest and I draw your attention to a report on one solution to this dilemma on page 22 of this issue.

In recent weeks the global media has been bombarded with the latest developments in the space market, with many commercial enterprises choosing to “boldly go” where others haven’t. Of course, any investments and developments in this sector will be seen as opportunities for the refractories industry. We highlight the size of the market and predictions for its growth rate on page 25.

I also draw your attention to the IRE Annual UK Conference, which takes place on 19 November in Sheffield, with a Training Day to be held on 20 November at the same venue. We always receive such positive feedback about this yearly networking event. It is an opportunity for the industry to gather and discuss the latest innovations in the refractories industry, but also to assess trends and options for business growth. As well as being packed with technical and business advice, the conference also offers delegates plenty of time to network with colleagues, competitors and like-minded people in a relaxed manner. Learn more about the event on page 26.

There is still time to register, but be quick. Remember, IRE council is actively seeking individuals who can help shape the Institute. Contact Georgina on secretary@ireng.org to find out what roles are available and how you can help. This is your institute so make it count. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our authors, advertisers and partners who have contributed to The Refractories Engineer in 2025. We thank you for your continued support. It has been a pleasure working with you and we look forward to 2026 with positivity and enthusiasm. I wish you all pleasant end of year celebrations.

This is your industry, so help us to help shape its future. Contact secretary@ireng.orgfor more details.
